Peak District rivers are 8-16°C depending on season. In wetsuits, you feel pleasantly cool rather than painful. Cold shock happens for first 30 seconds - controlled breathing prevents panic. Most swimmers adapt within 5-10 minutes and feel energized.
You need solid pool swimming experience (comfortable swimming 100 meters continuously). Rivers have slight currents that require water awareness. Instructors keep groups in calm designated areas. If you're a nervous swimmer, consider a pool-based cold-water class first.
Instructors watch continuously for cold-water signs (uncontrolled shivering, confusion, numbness). Signal the instructor if uncomfortable. You exit immediately, change into dry clothes, and drink warm fluid. No shame in exiting early - this is normal.
