Leeds train station places you 400m from the city centre pedestrian zone. Walk north along Boar Lane to reach the main shopping streets, or head west to find the canal basin. Most hotels cluster between the station and the University of Leeds campus, approximately 1.5km north of the centre.

The best time to visit Leeds is May through September. Offer the warmest weather for canal walks and outdoor markets, with long daylight hours and temperatures reaching 20°C.

The compact city centre sits south of the River Aire, connected by pedestrian bridges to newer developments. The university district extends north from the centre, while Headingley's restaurants and pubs serve the student population 3km northwest. Canal towpaths link these areas, with Kirkstall's green spaces forming the western boundary.

Many guides oversell Leeds as a shopping destination when Manchester and Liverpool offer more variety. The nightlife concentrates in student areas rather than the city centre, and several 'worth visiting' attractions require half-day commitments that might not suit shorter visits. Weather affects outdoor activities more than guides suggest.
