Brighton is England's most celebrated seaside city, where Victorian grandeur meets bohemian creativity just an hour from London. This coastal destination packs royal palaces, indie culture, and proper beach vibes into one colourful urban playground. The city earned its reputation as 'London-by-the-Sea' with its mix of alternative arts, LGBT+ friendly atmosphere, and traditional seaside attractions. For specific picks, see best things to do in Brighton.
The standout draws are Brighton Pier extends 524 meters into the English Channel with Victorian rides, arcade games, and traditional fish and chips, Royal Pavilion showcases George IV's Indo-Saracenic palace with onion domes and opulent Chinese-style interiors, The Lanes form a maze of narrow 17th-century streets packed with independent shops, jewellery stores, and cafes and Brighton Beach stretches for miles with distinctive pebbles, colourful beach huts, and volleyball courts.
Most guides oversell Brighton as a year-round destination when winter can be genuinely bleak with closed attractions and harsh winds off the sea. They also underestimate how crowded the pier and beach become on summer weekends - arrive early or visit weekdays. The city's food scene extends far beyond fish and chips, with excellent South Asian and Middle Eastern restaurants.
When we visited in April 2026: Brighton works best as an unstructured weekend rather than a tick-list day-trip. The Lanes, the Royal Pavilion, the Pier, and the seafront sit within a 15-minute walk of each other; the trick is to leave enough downtime to drift between them rather than racing through.
The best time to visit Brighton is May to September for warmest weather and beach activities, though July-August get crowded. Spring (April-May) offers good weather with fewer tourists.. Avoid: December to February when many pier attractions close and weather is coldest and wettest.
When we visited in August 2025: Late August, 26°C and sunny - Brighton Beach was solid people for two miles in either direction of the Pier. Bring water, find shade by 13:00.
Month-by-month context:
Brighton is on the London-Victoria/London-Bridge mainline; direct trains take 60-65 minutes (Thameslink, Southern). Advance singles routinely £15-25 booked 4+ weeks ahead, walk-up day-of singles £30-50 depending on time. Buses inside the city are run by Brighton & Hove Buses on a £2 single-fare cap (network-wide as of 2024). Driving in is realistic but parking is the limiting factor - most central car parks charge £3-4/hour and the seafront ones cap at £24/day.
Day-to-day:
Stay near the seafront for easy beach access and main attractions (£80-150/night). The Lanes area offers boutique options with character (£90-180/night). Budget travellers should consider hostels near the station (£25-45/night) or B&Bs in Kemptown (£60-90/night).
Areas to consider:

| Backpacker | £50-70 |
| Mid-range | £100-160 |
