Pickup tips
- Terminals 2, 3, and 5 have car hire desks within the terminal buildings
- Terminal 4 vehicles are reached by bus from the terminal — allow extra time
- The Car Hire Centre (Terminal 1 area) is served by a short bus ride from most terminals
- Pre-book and pre-pay where possible — walk-up rates are significantly higher
- Photograph the vehicle thoroughly before departure — note every existing mark on the pre-inspection form
Driving from Heathrow Airport (LHR)
M4 (east) takes you towards London and then connects to the M25 ring road
M25 clockwise (south) connects to the M3 (Southwest England, Hampshire) and M23 (Sussex, Brighton)
M25 anticlockwise (north) connects to the M40 (Oxford, Cotswolds) and M1 (Midlands, North England)
Avoid the M25 during peak hours (7–9am, 4–7pm) — it is among Europe's most congested motorways
Sat-nav is essential — Heathrow's immediate surroundings are confusing even for experienced drivers
Insurance: don't skip this
Same advice as our London guide applies. Check your CDW excess and consider third-party excess cover. European breakdown cover is worth adding if you plan to cross the Channel.
Frequently asked questions
It depends on your terminal. Terminals 2 and 3 have a dedicated Car Rental Centre accessible by a short walk or shuttle. Terminal 5 (British Airways) has car hire on Level 1 of the car park. Terminal 4 requires a bus to the Car Rental Centre. Detailed directions are in your booking confirmation.
City pickup (near King's Cross or Paddington) is often marginally cheaper, but adds the cost and stress of driving across London. For road trips away from the city, the convenience of Heathrow pickup usually outweighs the small price difference.
